In past years we raised money for Practice Makes Perfect (PMP), a nonprofit organization that runs summer enrichment programs in some of New York’s low-income neighborhoods. Although PMP no longer accepts individual donations, as it has grown into a for-profit social endeavour, its triathletes wanted to continue raising money for education-related causes by supporting a different nonprofit organization.
This summer Team PMP is raising money for a group called Students for Education Reform (SFER). SFER is a national grassroots organization that trains college students to become organizers who fight for better K-12 education policies and politics in their communities. The reason we decided to raise money for SFER is because this grassroots organization supports the conduits who could ultimately bring about changes in our most undeserved communities. In doing so, SFER is also empowering the next generation of education reformers.
We are running for SFER so that this organization is able to send 10 or more students to its national conference. Many of the students hoping to go to this conference are the first in their families to attend college. They come from low-income backgrounds and will be learning skills pertaining to advocacy. Specifically, they will be learning how to grow community support for effective local education system leaders.
