412 Food Rescue was founded to respond to a simple, yet unacceptable disconnect: the fact that almost half the food we produce goes to waste while many of us go hungry.
In Allegheny County, that is over 176,000 people--over 45,000 of whom are children.
1 in 5 families are food insecure--they do not know where their next meal is coming from.
Since March, 412 Food Rescue has rescued approximately 150,000 pounds of food--perfectly good fruits, vegetables, bread and milk--healthy, nutritious food that many of those in need often have no access to.
This has been--and continues to be possible--through the work of people like you. Volunteers who respond to our calls for drivers to transport food from donors to nonprofits that feed the hungry. Volunteers like you fill your bikes and cars with cases of produce and YOU deliver directly to organizations--you see the impact of your work.
And yet we have more opportunity to pick up LARGER donations--pallets full of food. We currently have one truck that a volunteer has donated but we need another to ensure that we cover ALL OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY.
Our goal is to rescue 2,000,000 pounds of food in the next three years--and provide over 1.5 million healthy meals.
Let us make sure that perfectly good, healthy food goes to those in need. Not landfills.
