We are please to announce our participation in the Annual Chicago Half Marathon and 5K on Sunday, September 24, 2017 – and we want you to support our team!
Last year, Equipo Colibri successfully raised over $2000. And this year we are planning to surpass that number.
This year, Equipo Colibri will be running to raise funds for the amazing Semillas de Justicia Community Garden, one of La Villita's hidden gems and where families and avid urban gardeners gather through the growing season to share and learn from each other. The funds raised will be used to create and expand programs in at Semillas in two different ways:
1. To build a roof in the central square of the garden to facilitate gardening classes and workshops, crafts, horticultural therapy, English classes, and movement workshops such as yoga, zumba, and meditation. This roof will also serve as a haven during the hottest and longest working days in the garden.
2. To create a bilingual gardening program for children ages 4-10 starting in the summer of 2018. During the gardening season, our garden is visited every week for more than 20 children. We would like to create an intentional space for our children to learn much like their parents, grandmothers and ancestors, to grow food in community.
We’d like to invite you to donate Equipo Colibri and show your support to Frontlines Communities, such as Little Village, facing the brunt of environmental injustices.
About our Garden:
The Semillas de Justicia Community Garden is located on 2727 S. Troy in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago; this garden of almost one acre began more than 8 years ago, when it was brought to the attention of the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO) that there was a strong odor of oil emanating from the ground. It was discovered that the site was being used to deposit remains of oil barrels. LVEJO organized with neighbors of Troy Street to demand that this site be cleaned and transformed into a community garden. As a result of this struggle, and with gardening being an important activity and component in the community, the garden on Troy today flourishes with a variety of vegetables, fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs, and flowers for the enjoyment of the community.
Equipo Colibri was founded by couple of avid runners and running aficionados on the spring 2016. Equipo Colibri is a team of like-minded individuals devoted to heightening awareness and spreading the word about LVEJO’s campaigns/projects and achieving Environmental Justice in Little Village and Chicago.
