The Walk for Farm Animals plays a key role in Farm Sanctuary’s funding and operations. We rely on individuals like you to help us bring about change for farm animals. By raising money through the Walk, you directly support our rescue, education, and advocacy programs. Because of you, we will help more animals than ever before!
Animals are Relying on You!
More than 10 billion farm animals are slaughtered every year for food in the United States. Before their terrifying deaths, the animals lead miserable lives filled with abuse and neglect. They suffer in cages so small they cannot stretch out a wing, watch their children be torn away moments after birth, have their beaks mutilated and their tails chopped off without anesthetic, and face a multitude of other horrors. By raising money for the Walk for Farm Animals, you are showing animals like Vinnie that someone cares.
It Just Takes $100!
$100 means the world to an animal rescued from abuse. By raising $100, you can provide a month’s worth of feed to two hungry cattle like William and Harry. Reaching out to friends and family to raise funds is a great way to spread a message of compassion. We have many helpful tips for how to start raising funds today!
It’s Easy to Be Successful!
Raising money for animals is easy! Here are a few tips to get started.
• Set a fundraising goal! How much do you want to raise for farm animals, and what are a few steps you can take to get there?
• Email all of your contacts! Ask each for $20 to support your efforts. Tell them why Farm Sanctuary’s work to help farm animals matters to you.
Ask everyone! Most people — no matter their dietary choices — are against animal abuse and have no idea what happens on a factory farm. Tell the story of a Farm Sanctuary resident like little Angelo to demonstrate the importance of Farm Sanctuary’s work.
How to Raise Funds
It’s easy to be successful at fundraising! Follow these simple guidelines to raise even more money for farm animals!
Before asking for money, decide what your fundraising goal will be. Select deadlines for yourself. Keep track of who you ask and when so you are able to send individual reminders
Remember that nobody likes cruelty to animals — no matter their dietary choices — and most people are shocked to hear what happens on factory farms. Choose an animal story and photo from Farm Sanctuary’s rescue pages to help make your case. Don’t be afraid to show your passion — your friends and family will care if you care.
Each email should include a brief explanation of what Farm Sanctuary does, what the Walks accomplish, and why you are choosing to participate. Highlight your fundraising goal and how much you would like individuals to give. Here’s a good way to start: “Hi! I’m asking my friends to give $10 to help care for Eric at Farm Sanctuary!” Provide more information about Eric’s story, and include a link to your personal giving page hosted by walkforfarmanimals.org.
Using Facebook and Twitter, post your goal and why you’re walking. Ask your friends to donate $10 through your personal giving page. Share your favorite animal rescue stories from Farm Sanctuary to teach your friends about the animals their donations are helping. Be sure to include a link to your personal giving page in all of your posts!
After donations have been collected, remember to thank your donors via email, in person, or with a hand-written “thank you” note. Emphasize how their support contributed to your effort to reach your fundraising goal and communicate how much money was raised overall to help animals and prevent animal abuse on farms.

Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of factory farming and to encourage a new awareness and understanding about farm animals. Through the years, we have rescued thousands of animals, and educated millions of people about their plight. At Farm Sanctuary, these animals are our friends, not our food. Farm Sanctuary remains solidly committed to our mission to end cruelty to farm animals and promote compassionate living through rescue, education and advocacy efforts. We hope you will join us! After all, a compassionate world begins with you!

About Chicago VeganMania
“Vegan culture and community have grown rapidly in the last few years. Not long ago, most people had never heard the word vegan. Vegans – people who live compassionately by not eating or wearing animals or products that come from animals – were basically invisible. We did much of our shopping in tiny health food co-ops, and our dining in a few carefully selected restaurants.
Now there are dozens of products with the word vegan gracing the fronts of the packaging in most supermarkets, and vegan options abound in dining establishments all over the place. Celebrities describe how their vegan diets give them their sexy bodies or protect them from heart disease, and the small but burgeoning vegan culture is moving from the fringes to middle America.
Nowhere is this more apparent than in Chicago. Famous as the "hog butcher to the world", Chicago boasts at least 18 exclusively vegan restaurants (and dozens more vegan-friendly ones), several local vegan food companies, and a rapidly growing community of herbivores.
Chicago VeganMania is a celebration of this dynamic new community. We bring together the vegan restaurants and food companies, leaders and entrepreneurs, doctors and chefs, businesses and organizations, singers and dancers, and we put them in one big place to show them all off to the world.”
As a Walk participant, your fundraising dollars fuel our life-saving mission. This year, we want to thank our top fundraisers who go the extra mile to support farm animals everywhere.
Top fundraisers (as of 9/23*) and one guest will receive special recognition at an exclusive dinner with Farm Sanctuary President and Co-founder Gene Baur, hosted by the legendary Chicago Diner. Celebrating “Meat Free Since ’83,” the restaurant is a landmark establishment started by “Chef Jo” Kaucher and Mickey Hornick. Top fundraisers will join Gene on Friday, September 30, for a delicious meal featuring some of the Diner’s signature dishes.

The Walk For Farm Animals
The Walk for Farm Animals has been part of Farm Sanctuary since the beginning. In 1986, we didn’t yet have our sanctuary in Watkins Glen, but we had a small group of dedicated volunteers who helped us establish the first Walk for Farm Animals in support of our mission to stop animal abuse and suffering. Those first efforts were modest by today’s standards, but they helped fund the down payment for what became our first official shelter and national headquarters.
From those humble beginnings, the Walks have continued to be a vital part of our fundraising and outreach efforts and keep growing as more people learn about farm animal issues and want to help. The funds raised by the Walks support our work to rescue farm animals, provide urgent care and lifelong refuge, as well as our education and advocacy efforts for farm animals everywhere. Over the years, the Walks have raised nearly $2 million for Farm Sanctuary thanks to the dedication of our volunteer Walk Coordinators and our amazing walkers! You can join the movement and start making a difference today by registering for the 2016 Chicago Walk for Farm Animals and Fun Run!
