Time is Ticking Away

BENEFITING: WELLESLEY FRIENDLY AID ASSOCIATION
EVENT DATE: Apr 18, 2016
The 2016 Boston Marathon will be my first opportunity to run this incredibly historic race. I am both excited and honored to run in support of Wellesley Friendly Aid (WFA).
In the spring of 2015, I was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. After this physical setback my mental psyche was fragile and I doubted my physical abilities. As time passed, I thought I'd lost my love for running. I thought if I focused on making a difference in the lives of others it might help renew my passion for running.
One of my running buddies, Scott Spencer, introduced me to The Wellesley Friendly Aid Association. He connected me with Karen Mondell and I began investigating the possibility of running the 2016 Boston Marathon to support the charity. I was pleased to find WFA and I were a solid match.
WFA is a community-based, non-profit organization that works to improve the well-being and quality of life of the residents of Wellesley, Massachusetts. WFA programs include:
► Providing scholarships for children to attend camp
► Distributing grocery certificates for holiday meals at Thanksgiving
► Granting financial aid in critical situations
► Helping individuals complete applications for fuel assistance and food stamps
► Providing temporary, non-medical assistance to neighbors experiencing a crisis
► Lending medical equipment free of charge
► Hosting a social group for senior women
► Supporting ESL programs
I believe all of the WFA programs are significant and important. However, as an educator, there are two (Camp Financial Aid and English Classes) that resonate deeply.
I am passionate about the education and development of young people and believe attending camps (general, sports, academic, leadership, etc.) is an important part of their growth. WFA is dedicated to giving children living at or near poverty levels an enriching summer academic program or summer camp experience.
WFA helps sponsor an English as a Second Language Program (ESL) in the community by providing books, classroom materials and space for ESL classes. The non-profit offers a range of ESL programs including beginner and intermediate English, writing, and conversation classes.
I am grateful for the opportunity that Wellesley Friendly Aid has extended me. I pray I will represent Wellesley Friendly Aid, the entire Wellesley community and those who contribute to this worthy cause well as I run and raise funds.
