In 2015 the American Red Cross disaster relief: provided 950,000 meals and snacks; more than 910,000 relief items for individuals and families; nearly 24,000 overnight shelter stays after disasters.
The Red Cross Rescue Racers is the official charity training team for the Myrtle Beach Marathon. Team members "Train With A Purpose," combining a healthy and educational activity with community service. Team members train for 17-weeks with professional, volunteer coaches. Each participant sets a minimum $500 goal and all funds raised by team members goes to help fund the American Red Cross programs and services. The training program is now in its 9th year and combined with donations from the Myrtle Marathon Board of Directors, team fundraising is approaching a cumulative $500,000.
The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet. Although the Red Cross is not a government agency, it is an essential part of the response when disaster strikes.
