Herow Mutt Millitia, my name is Mabel and this is my Mommy, Kristy. She rescued me when I was a worm and flee infested puppy with mange from the hero's over at 'A New Beginning Rescue' in Orlando, FL. I was so sad and scared to watch each one of my siblings leave me with their new families as I was the runt of my litter and the last to be adopted. But when Kristy walked in and our eyes met I knew that she was the pawfect hooman for me! And holy woofers, has she jam-packed a lot of adventure into our 3 years together...
Being born and raised in Orlando with stints in Tampa, London and Gainesville (Go Gators!), I felt a strong desire to pack it up and head west to Southern California. Even though I had never been to San Diego and only knew one person my heart was leading me there. So a little over a year ago I did what every dreamer + doer does and loaded up what would fit in my 2-door car leaving everything familiar behind for the unknown. Mabel and I hit the open road together taking about 4 months to make our way across the country diving in deep exploring from sea to shining sea!
Settling into our new home was easy, I mean have you seen the beauty that is San Diego?! So I quickly set out to accomplish the two burning desires that I promised myself to jump into when I arrived- start running again after a 3 year hiatus and volunteer at a doggy rescue.
I immediately joined a running club and set my sites on a half marathon. I discovered Marley's Mutts through my research on SoCal rescues and was instantly drawn to Zach's miraculous story of nurturing the human-canine bond. I've always wanted to run a marathon but never thought I could for whatever excuse or another. When the collision of my goals presented itself to run my first marathon AND raise money for my favorite furry friend rescue to further propel its mission that speaks directly to my heart strings, plus the motivation of seeing a man that has overcome relatable obstacles to complete a brave 26.2... well that was all the inspiration I needed to sign up for this perfect storm!
I run because it grounds me, it balances my being, it allows my mind to wonder, my creativity to flow, my thoughts to reflect, my soul to dream, my spirit to soar. It's my essential 'me-time' to jam and explore nature and take in new destinations and feed my body, mind + soul to be present, in the now.
I am running the Chicago Marathon for awareness of the helpless pups with no voices who need organizations like MM's and people like Zach to save these living creatures. These animals who are our greatest companions, who become our family, who heal and protect us. Yeah, I'm running for them... for my Mabel.
