BENEFITING: LAZAREX CANCER FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: LAZAREX CANCER FOUNDATION
Earlier this year I had the privilege of running the Big Sur Marathon as part of Team for Life. The marathon charity slot entry was a gift from Frank to help me get running again after my accident in 2014. Being struck by a car doing something that I loved was harder to handle than I ever expected. After coming back from cancer in 2013, I thought I was past the dark times. Thanks to my husband’s thoughtfulness and foresight, he bought me a gift that was bigger than I even think he anticipated.
Completing the marathon was just what I needed to come out of the black hole I had entered, but Team for Life was an even bigger gift. I did not know much about Lazarex Cancer Foundation other than what I had read in the registration materials. Their mission statement it simple yet powerful
“As Lazarex Cancer Foundation we improve the outcome of cancer care, giving hope, dignity and life to end stage cancer patients and the medically underserved by providing assistance with costs for FDA clinical trial participation, identification of clinical trial options, community outreach and education.”
That made sense to me. Seemed like a good cause. Let’s race. And then I went to the Team for Life meeting and heard one of the VIPs (Very Important Patient) speak about how Lazarex had changed the course of his life. He was struck with a rare bone cancer in the prime of his life. He had a wife, small children and baby on the way. He was not given a very good prognosis or much hope but did have an opportunity to participate in a clinical trial. But how do you do participate in a clinical trial far away from your family, not work, pay for all the living expenses and still provide for your family? For most people the answer is “I can’t.” With Lazarex it is possible.
Lazarex provides financial assistance to defray the costs associated with patient participation in FDA clinical trials. They also identify clinical trial options that otherwise might not be found. Cancer is financially and emotionally devastating. Lazarex builds a bridge to hope, dignity and life for cancer patients and their families.
For this VIP it was a life changer. He stood in front of the entire Team for Life and in front of his eight-year-old daughter (the baby on the way!) and told us the difference it had made. As a human being, I was moved by what this organization does. As a cancer survivor, I knew I had to do more. My cancer was caught early, my treatment worked but it was not lost on me that this could have just as easily gone the other way for me.
I am now racing New York City Marathon on November 1st for Team for Life and the Lazarex Cancer Foundation. I want to do more than just write the check for the entry this time. I want to help make a difference for this organization and all the people that they serve. That is why I am reaching out to all of my friends and family to help make that difference, too. 100% of all the money that Lazarex Cancer Foundation raises goes to the patients thanks to the generosity of its founders, the Dornsife family. The Dornsife’s cover all of the overhead and operating costs for the Foundation so the patients can benefit from the donations.
Please consider making a donation and help make a difference for these patients. I would be honored if you could support me as I run New York city for this great cause.
