EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
I am very excited to be running the 2014 Boston Marathon, and am truly honored to be running it with Team Eye and Ear. I have always been a runner and an athlete, but I have never run a marathon, and always thought I had no interest in doing so. But the events in Boston on April 15, 2013 changed all that; I vowed that day that I would be a part of the Boston Marathon in 2014. So here I am, age 54, mother of five, training in the cold wintry months in Marblehead for my first ever marathon! And despite the unrelenting polar vortex this winter, I am actually enjoying my training runs!
Team Eye and Ear was a natural choice for me. My family has been involved with Mass Eye and Ear, and before that Schepens Eye Research Institute, for several generations. In the late 1950s, Dr. Charles Schepens and his innovative surgical techniques restored the vision of my grandfather after he suffered two retinal detachments. Years later he restored the vision of my grandmother, who also suffered a retinal detachment, and later yet, that of my father. The Ankeny family understandably became quite grateful to Dr. Schepens, and made a long term commitment to support his work and his research. My father still plays an active role on the Board at Mass Eye and Ear; I am proud to carry on the family legacy also as a trustee of MEEI.
Running the marathon with Team Eye and Ear gives me a chance to give back to this amazing institution in a very concrete way. I see myself and the other runners as true ambassadors for MEEI, raising awareness of all the good things going on here now, while simultaneously raising funds for all the great things to come. There are some very exciting developments right now in vision research and possible gene therapies, and this is where I would like to dedicate my fundraising efforts.
Please join me in supporting Mass Eye and Ear by making a donation today. My personal goal is to raise $20,000 for eye research. An anonymous benefactor has generously pledged to match your gift dollar for dollar (up to $10,000), so YOUR GIFT IS DOUBLED! If you company has a matching gifts program, your gift would be quadrupled! Wow. Please click on the "Donate" button to the right. If you prefer to send a check, make it payable to "Foundation of Mass Eye and Ear" and send it directly to me at 16 Waldron Street, Marblehead, MA 01945.
Thank you for your support! I will continue to train hard, and together we can make a difference at Mass Eye and Ear!
