#99 in the bag. Resting up before Meeker next Friday
September 02, 2017
I have spent the last three summers climbing the highest 100 summits in Colorado. It's been a great journey to the best parts of this wonderful state. On many of these hikes and climbs I've had time to think about how I got to this place in my life.
My personal journey began on a trip to the mountains of Northern England when I was ten years old. I knew I had found my calling on a hike through the rain clouds and peat marshes, where I encountered the power of natural wilderness. Since then I have followed a path towards the mountains, that led to Northern England, the US and eventually to Colorado. The mounatins and the wilderness that sourounds these places have given me much joy and peace. Beyond the physical and emotional challenges, the mountains have provided me with many deep lessons and a confidence in myself, that has enabled our family to make big and impactful decisions.
I know I am fortunate to have had so many opportunities. That's why I became part of the Big City Mountaineers' family over 10 years ago; as a volunteer, donor and eventually Board member and President. Over that time BCM has provided 1,000's of life changing wilderness expeditions for under-served urban youth. These seven day trips involve youth from many cities across the US, and include one-on-one adult mentors and a big summit day. I have met many of these kids before and after their adventures, and I know that BCM has profoundly changed many of their lives. When someone discovers their self worth and a deep confidence in who they are, via a wilderness experince, it helps them see the potential of everything they can become. I have seen youth make major positive changes in their lives, choices that also impact their families and peers back at home. That's why I am such an advocate of BCM and the positive change it makes in our world.
This is why I am asking you to make a donation to BCM as I complete my 100th summit on September 8th, my 50th Birthday. Please take a moment to think generously about this donation. Your donation would be a meaningful step towards our goal. Any amount is appreciated: $50, $75, $100, $250 or $500. You decide!
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on September 8th either on the summit of Mount Meeker, or at Chasm Lake, or the party in Louisville that evening. If you aren't able to celebrate with me that day, I thank you in advance for helping to support me and Big City Mountaineers.
